Frequently Asked Questions
What should I expect while receiving therapy?
Therapy is a lot of things. Of course, you will have space to talk about your emotions, but therapy offers much more than that. In our work together, you may be invited to challenge unhelpful thoughts, behaviors, and beliefs, and to gently explore past experiences or traumas that may still be impacting you—often in ways that feel hidden or hard to name.
With support and guidance, you can begin to make connections between past experiences and current struggles, allowing you to process what you’ve been carrying and, over time, loosen its hold on you.
Do you accept insurance for therapy services?
I currently accept Aetna (excluding EBMS), Cigna, and Optum insurance plans in the state of Utah. Clients using insurance can book a consultation online through Alma or Tava Health, depending on their plan.
Beginning March 1, 2026, all insurance processing will transition to LifeStance. I believe this change will offer a more comprehensive experience and a more user-friendly billing system for clients.
I am also able to provide superbills for clients who wish to use out-of-network benefits. These can be submitted to your insurance company and may apply toward your out-of-network deductible. Many plans reimburse between 40–70% of the out-of-pocket cost, but I encourage you to contact your insurance carrier directly to understand your specific benefits.
Why self-pay?
Privacy. Self-pay allows for the most direct and confidential relationship between client and clinician—without insurance requirements around diagnosis or documentation to justify care.
Together, we determine how often you are seen, how long therapy continues, and which therapeutic approaches best support your goals. You pay out of pocket, and I provide a superbill that you may submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement. You may also use a Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA).
This approach allows me to focus fully on providing thoughtful, ethical, and sustainable care, while protecting the integrity of the client-counselor relationship.
What if I feel I need more than 1 hour of therapy per week?
Throughout the therapy process, we will regularly review your progress and adjust your treatment plan as needed. You always remain in control of your care and will be trusted and respected to know what feels right for you.
Why OpenPath?
Accessibility. I value Open Path Psychotherapy Collective because it is a nonprofit organization committed to expanding access to affordable mental health care.
Clients pay a one-time lifetime membership fee to Open Path, which supports administrative costs and allows them to be matched with clinicians who offer sliding-scale availability. In our first session, we will agree on a fee within the $40–$70 range. You will then submit your application to Open Path and share your membership number with me to confirm eligibility.
Open Path does not require additional documentation such as diagnoses or treatment justifications, allowing your care to proceed in the same way as self-pay therapy. I aim to reserve approximately 20% of my private-pay caseload for Open Path clients, in alignment with my ethical commitments to justice and beneficence.
What is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. EMDR is a structured, evidence-based therapy that helps you process distressing or traumatic experiences in a safe and supportive environment with a trained clinician.
Traumatic experiences can become “stuck” in the nervous system and may continue to impact emotional regulation, beliefs about yourself, and relationships well into adulthood. EMDR works by helping the brain reprocess these memories so they no longer feel as overwhelming or disruptive.
Many people find EMDR to be highly effective—and in some cases faster at reducing distress—than other therapeutic approaches. When appropriate, I may integrate EMDR with modalities such as CBT or DBT to support more comprehensive healing.
Do you provide virtual, telehealth appointments?
Yes. I offer virtual therapy sessions through a secure, confidential, and HIPAA-compliant online platform. Telehealth appointments are available upon request and can be a flexible option for clients who prefer or require remote care. All insurance clients will have telehealth appointments by default when scheduling via LifeStance Health (beginning March 1, 2026).
Do you work with the LGBTQ+ community?
Yes. I am deeply committed to providing affirming, inclusive care for LGBTQ+ clients. As a bisexual person married to a non-binary partner, I bring both professional training and lived experience into this work.
I am comfortable supporting clients navigating identity exploration, minority stress, and trauma, and I strive to honor each individual’s unique journey. Canary Counseling is an affirming practice for transgender and gender-expansive clients, and I am able to provide documentation for established clients in support of evidence-based, gender-affirming medical care when appropriate.
Do you work with couples?
Yes. I have completed Gottman Method Levels 1 and 2, as well as additional training focused on couples and addiction. I continue to pursue advanced education to deepen my work with couples.
I am comfortable working with couples in both traditional and non-traditional relationship structures and aim to provide a respectful, nonjudgmental space for all partners involved. Supporting you and your partner(s) in strengthening connection and navigating challenges is work I approach with care and intention.
